PEI Mussels compared to Wild Mussels - What's the difference?

You’ve likely seen these 2 kinds of mussels: Prince Edward Island (PEI) Farmed Mussels or Wild-Caught Mussels.

Both are the exact same species—the Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis). However, one is farm raised and one is wild and they are both excellent choices. They slightly differ in the way they look, taste, and for preparation. Whether you are looking for a budget-friendly briny bite or a premium, hassle-free dinner, both are excellent choices; the "best" one simply depends on your personal palate and your plans for the kitchen.

PEI Mussels compared to Wild Mussels - What's the difference?

It is important to understand that these mussels differ in three major ways: Price, Handling, and Taste.

  • Harvest Area: In North America, if you are buying farmed, you are almost certainly eating a rope-grown mussel from PEI, Canada. If you go wild, your mussels are likely harvested from Maine, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts.
  • The Price Tag: Because of the specialized aquaculture process, PEI farmed mussels will always be more expensive than wild mussels.
  • The Preparation: PEI mussels already come 100% sand and grit free - so there is no need for extra scrubbing or purging the mussels before cooking. Wild mussels do generally come cleaned as well, but there is always a chance the beard, sand, and grit remains.
  • The Taste: They both taste similar, but Wild mussels are stronger in flavor and have more of a deep, ocean brine taste to them. PEI mussels are farm raised for consistency, which the flavor to some seafood coinsures could lack in comparison to Wild Mussels.

PEI Farmed Mussel

  • Grown: Raised using longline aquaculture (rope grown). Farmers collect tiny mussel seeds and place them into long, mesh "socks" that hang from ropes suspended in the water column.
  • Pros: Consistent in size, price stable, 100% sand free and grit free. Always available year round due to it being farm raised in controlled climates.
  • Cons: Some people might find their mild flavor to be lacking. Shell sizes can be small, same with meat size as well - not a great option for those looking for bigger meat to shell ratio. 1-2 day shorter shelf life due to them being farm raised compared to Wild Mussels.  They are the more expensive option.

Wild-Harvested Mussel

  • Grown: Exactly nature intended: On rocks, piers, in the intertidal zone. They are often exposed to the air during low tide. This makes them hardy but also leads to slower, more variable growth. They are harvested from their natural beds rather than ropes/equipment.
  • Pros: High meat to shell ratio, very flavorful, cheaper in price. Decent shelf life (4-6 Days).
  • Cons: Sizing can vary depending on the harvest location, or then tend to run naturally larger in size which some people do not prefer. Even though you can source cleaned wild mussels (purged and debearded) the cleaning is never 100%, you may have to do your own purging and debearding before cooking. Availability can be inconsistent, as wild environments deal with rain closures and red tides.
