Pick Your Prep:

Boston Mackerel stands out as one of the most remarkably versatile fish pulled from North Atlantic waters. Its high natural oil content, firm texture, and rich nutrient profile make it useful far beyond a single cooking style:

  • Whole Cooked & Roasted: The rich oils protect the flesh from drying out under high heat. High-heat charcoal grilling, pan-searing, or whole oven-roasting renders the skin crisp and golden while keeping the inside flaky and tender. Click here for our recipe.
  • Cured for Sashimi (Shime Saba): In Japanese culinary traditions, fresh Atlantic mackerel is filleted, salt-cured, and lightly bathed in rice vinegar. This process mellows the oils, firming the flesh into a melt-in-your-mouth delicacy with a balanced, tangy finish. Click here for our recipe.
  • Hot & Cold Smoking: Mackerel takes on hardwood smoke brilliantly. Brined and hot-smoked into golden fillets, it becomes a flaky, deeply savory spread for charcuterie boards, salads, or fish cakes.
  • Prized Angler & Commercial Bait: Smaller "tinker" mackerel are a secret weapon for New England fishermen. Highly scented and oil-rich, they serve as top-tier live or cut bait for targeting prized offshore game like Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, Striped Bass, and Cod.
  • Whole-Food Raw Pet Nutrition: Raw-feeding pet owners seek out fresh whole Boston mackerel as a natural, species-appropriate superfood for dogs and cats. Being a small, wild fish low on the food chain, it offers a clean source of complete protein, whole-body bone calcium, and dense Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) that promote healthy skin, shiny coats, and reduced joint inflammation.

We believe the best seafood comes from real partnerships. We buy our Boston Mackerel directly from local fishermen, anchored by a long-standing relationship with Capt. Jack out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. By working directly with Capt. Jack's vessel season after season, we cut out the middleman to ensure peak dock-to-table freshness while supporting traditional New England fishing heritage.

Boston Mackerel is celebrated for its rich, oily flavor and firm texture, making it a versatile ingredient for various culinary creations.

  • Grilling: A simple yet delicious preparation is to grill the whole fish with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of sea salt. The high fat content keeps the fish moist and tender.
  • Pan-Searing: Fillets can be pan-seared skin-side down until crispy, creating a beautiful contrast between the crisp skin and the tender flesh.
  • Japanese Cuisine (Saba Sushi): For those who appreciate the art of Japanese cuisine, Boston Mackerel is the key to making Saba Sushi. It's often cured briefly with salt and vinegar (a process known as shime saba) to firm up the flesh and enhance its flavor. This delicate curing process is what makes it a prized ingredient in both nigiri and rolls.

Frozen items are shipped with dry ice to ensure the arrive fully frozen. Please place them directly into your freezer upon arrival.

If you order fresh and frozen items together, we package your shipment using gel ice packs instead of dry ice to protect your fresh goods. As a result, frozen items may partially thaw during transit. You can safely place them straight back into your freezer, or allow them to finish defrosting and enjoy right away.

Defrosting Guidelines

  1. Overnight in the Fridge: Small packs take 6–12 hours; large packs take 12–48 hours.
  2. Cold Water Bowl: Submerge sealed items in cold water for a faster thaw.
  • Note: Do not use hot water or attempt to thaw by cooking, as this ruins the natural texture and flavor.
