Mullet is a historical and culinary staple along the Carolina coast and the wider Southeast, prized for its distinct, rich flavor and high oil content. It’s a favorite among locals! The flesh is firm, white, and noted for a rich, nutty, and savory taste, a flavor that many find superior to other popular white fish. The high oil content makes it particularly moist and flavorful.

Mullet's high oil content makes it incredibly well-suited for cooking methods that highlight its moist texture and rich flavor. This is how the locals love to prepare it:
- Smoking/Grilling: This is a classic method! The whole fish is excellent when split and roasted over an open flame, such as a charcoal grill or hickory fire. The high oil content prevents it from drying out and absorbs smoky flavors beautifully.
- Pan-Fried: A simple and delicious preparation. The cleaned, whole fish can be scored, seasoned, and pan-fried until the skin is crispy and the meat is tender.
- Baking/Roasting: Stuff the cavity with herbs (like rosemary, thyme, and lemon), drizzle with olive oil, and bake until the flesh is flaky. This is a simple, healthy way to enjoy its natural richness.
Frozen items are shipped with dry ice to ensure the arrive fully frozen. Please place them directly into your freezer upon arrival.
If you order fresh and frozen items together, we package your shipment using gel ice packs instead of dry ice to protect your fresh goods. As a result, frozen items may partially thaw during transit. You can safely place them straight back into your freezer, or allow them to finish defrosting and enjoy right away.
Defrosting Guidelines
- Overnight in the Fridge: Small packs take 6–12 hours; large packs take 12–48 hours.
- Cold Water Bowl: Submerge sealed items in cold water for a faster thaw.
- Note: Do not use hot water or attempt to thaw by cooking, as this ruins the natural texture and flavor.
The fish arrived here thawed but fresh. They were each plenty big enough to feed 2 people. The service and concern for the customer's satisfaction is top notch. If you're in the market for fresh seafood, look no further - it's right here.
